Hi Andy
I have gone and picked up a shin splint 5 weeks before the MDS - now I have my work cut out.
Apart from needing to know if there is a miracle cure, or way I can tape/strap up to at least get me by walking the MDS. I was just wondering if there is any new information to be added to this MTSS doc? My symptoms are exactly as described and I reckon I am in the middle of severity. Are the exercises described mainly for anterior shin splints? Or are they also for posterior tibialis shin splints. The pain I have is definatly in the posterior region.
Of course I am currently "REST" and resting from running and even resting from major walking, but I cycled Saturday and although this went well, it did agravate the area a little.
All in all I am very concerned with the MDS only being 4 weeks away!! What can I do other than pray?
Thanks Mark

This injury is not a shin injury but a group of conditions affecting the shin due to repetitive nature and high incidence of overpronation. Check your shoes, fit Formthotics (not orthotics) massage tight muscles along inside of shin and calf before running. Strengthen the calf and shin muscles. (Try walking on heels toes and forefoot off ground. Use resistance band when seated, hook under one foot and pull up with other). I also suggest you wear compression calf sleeves such as Compressport or even wrap an elastic bandage around your lower leg. See a physio for a few more exercise ideas. If all else fails then try and move your MDS on to 2013 or you may be much longer out of action than is worth it.
Hope this helps, good luck.Train Fast - Race Faster; Train Slow - Race Slow!!

Hi thanks for the advice
I have seen a sports injury specialist and they say its periositis and are going to treat me over the few weeks I have left before the MDS. I have stopped training now, to enable it to heal, on the basis that training now would make it worse, and some comfort is that my general fitness will not suffer too much. I can cycle and do gym sessions but no running or walking. It is a bas*^rd.
I have KT tape on it currently and am due back thursday night for further treatment. The chap is ex forces from hereford (you know the chaps) extra special, and he is confident i will get to the start line. and if I rest i will have at least fresh tissue there. Trust him not to worry, an all that. I will let you know how it goes.
